I just bought a Matco WFW250 (item # 117-062) mig welder. Won't drive the feed motor. No clicking, the feed motor has been replaced. When the machine is on, I have the proper voltages on both sides of the main relay, and at the circuit boards. Looks like the gun control board has also been replaced, a new TIP142 (Q1) transistor is in it.
I've had the main PCB and the gun control board checked by a TV guy, the TIP142, and TIP 147 transistors check OK. I did find one forum where a guy says he had a board repaired, and the shop replaced the 555 timer unit, and Q1, for the same issues. Gestetner dsm645 service manual. I'm suspecting a board problem, since I have voltage, andyone else had any experiences with these? I'm able to replace any bad componenets on the PCB, but need help in a direction to go to! This welder was made by Solar/Century, same welder as Snap-On YA240B Does anyone have or know of a schematic for these PCB's?
What are the most commonly replaced parts for this type of problem? The gun selector switch is really sloppy. When I try to jiggle it, with power on, there is still no feed.
How do I check the main relay? Is there power to it ONLY when the gun switch is pressed?
The power board part # is: 880-113-666 The gun control board # is: 880-295-666 ANY suggestions, or help at all would be MOST appreciated. I think you're looking at one of the problems these machines present. I'll be very surprised if you find any support from the general community for fringe manufactured equipment. I recommend that for any future machine purchases you consider a major brand. I own several Miller units, the oldest being a pulsing tungsten power source that's probably older than half the guys who post on this board and I can still get excellent support from the factory for it.
From a live person on the fone, no less. Or online PDF of the owners manual including schematic and parts list at 3AM in my PJs. And all the critical parts are still available. I wish I had something real to ease your situation. Were I in your shoes I would not invest much money or time in this thing. If you're really jammed up and need to make it work (can't yet replace it) instead of trying to find the non-existent knowledge base of common failures of such an uncommon unit.
Or throwing parts at it. Jump on the pig's back and see what you've got. I've never seen one of these and a google brought up a whopping four returns. Three of which gave zero info of any kind and the fourth was you making this same inquire elsewhere, but I'm guessing there's a facility to run a spoolgun (selectable with a switch) about which you write that it's wobbly. I'd start there (after you certify that your gun trigger closes the pair all the way to the plug).
Go inside and certify the 'gun select' switch or take it out of the path. As far as checking the relay you wrote that there is appropriate voltage on both sides. I'm not clear what you mean. Checking a relay is simple. The armature will change state when the coil is energized and the contacts will follow. You wrote the wire doesn't feed and I assume the electrode isn't energizing??
What about the gas solenoid?? Can you determine if it's working? You wrote the wire doesn't feed and I assume the electrode isn't energizing?? What about the gas solenoid??
Can you determine if it's working? The electrode is also dead, no power. The gas solenoid is not being energized. BUT, when I hold the trigger switch closed, and switch to the 'spool gun' setting, one solenoid does, in fact click, making me ask if the main gun switch could be the problem. I've checked the trigger switch, and the cable running the length of the liner, and the switch's cable is continuos. So.did you get it free because it doesn't work??or have you been using it, and then it just stopped working? Not 'free' but almost!
The previous owner had it for 13 years. He replaced the wire feed motor. Since taking it apart, I discovered the gun control board was replaced, as Q1 is new looking, not epoxy covered, and is a Philips instead of a Motorola part. I've had the TIP142 and TIP147 transistors checked, by TV repair and they confirmed, they are OK. I found one post online, saying he had similar troubles, and when he got board back from repair, the Q1 had been replaced, along with what the writer called a 8 legged chip. I'm assuming he meant the 555 timer that is on the gun control board.
I have enough experience in electronics to replace the IC's, but I'm not good at troubleshooting the components. I just want to get this machine running, not only because someone else couldn't, but because it is a workhorse, and could replace my 100 amp Lincoln!

Well, 100% positive it was not made by snap-on. Just rebranded. I pray he didn't pay mch for it if it comes from Italy. There is a company there that makes welders and they are all pretty junky. Daytona Mig sells some of them. Snap-On is pretty good about putting out good products but if it is really from Italy then its junk. I had a Italian mig from Daytona.
Lots of the Harbor Freight and other generic low quality migs are from the same factory. I am not trying to be a jerk, but I hope he paid very little for it.
Not everything Snap-On is the greatest. There name is appearing on all kinds of stuff just like Cat.
They make money by having their name on vacuums at Costco or work boots at WalMart. It called brand regonition. Lincoln, Miller and Esab are the biggest in welding. They are well known for this. They don't make machines for other companies unless there are huge numbers. Acklands in Canada, before Grainger bought them out, had their own line of welding equipment. It was all rebadged Miller with orange paint.

They were Miller's biggest customer and were usually lower priced a little bit as well. Lincoln supplies machines to Red-D-Arc and some of them have different engines or features but Red-D-Arc is the largest welder rental company in N. America and possibly the world. They also sell machines but we're talking thousands and thousands of machines which translates into thousands and thousands of dollars.
With that kind of money, Miller and Lincoln aren't too concerned with their own name being on it. I wouldn't suspect Snap-On sells a lot of welders in comparison but wants to have them available to their customers. They have to go to smaller manufacturers to get them because these smaller manufacturers don't have too much brand recognition but still make sales to Snap-On. Somebody makes it for Snap-On but Snap-On is generally regarded as high quality.
There's not a lot of conventional MIG and TIG welders out there. If it does TIG, it should also do stick. To be MIG and TIG would need to be a DC constant voltage for MIG and DC constant current for TIG or stick. How many amps is it? Maybe it's something like the old Airco Dip/Stick 160 that was originally built by another company but I forget the name.
Maybe similar to a Panasonic Gunslinger? Can you post a picture?
Actually,a Snap On dealer told me that Snap On does not make anything except Hand Tools. They dont even make their own torque wrenches. So Miller or somebody probably made the welder anyway. Its been a long time since I priced a Welder on a Snap On truck but the last time I did it was at least a thousand dollars higher than you could buy the same welder for somewhere else.Just had red paint on it instead of blue.Things change I know, but I dont think Snap On has started building welders.I dont know if Miller makes them for Snap On or not.Somebody does.
